ninny idgie question

My overall impression is that in the book, which I've not read, they were clearly separate people, but in the movie, they purposely left it open that they could be the same person...

No, they are not the same person. Idgy is first seen as the little blonde girl wearing the white dress w/blue hair bow and sash for her sister's wedding. She is later seen attending the wedding in a yellow pantsuit, and is also with Ruth when they witness Buddy's death.

Have seen it many times, shed many tears and since the second time I wonder why does Ninny pretend to be Idgy's sister in law? Because when in the end they meet at Ruth's grave saying with that smile that Idgy is still in the woods it must be a hint that she and Idgy are the same person!

I watched this movie when I was a kid I loved it. I just finished watching it again after all these years on Netflix. I get the feeling that Ninny and Idgie, are the same person. Because if you look at the scene in Ninny, room she has pictures of Idgie and Ruth and of Idgie's parents I believe. You think she would also have pictures of her late husband or her own parents. But the way the camera had the pictures close up. It made you wonder who Ninny, really is. Plus, when she and Evelyn, visited Ruth's grave. Ninny, kind of stood behind with a smile letting Evelyn, read the card. So, that also made me wonder that Ninny and Idgie had to be one and the same person. But who knows I think it would have been cool to maybe see older Idgie, at the grave. Then we probably would have known that Ninny and Idgie aren't the same people.

If they were the same person, why would Sipsey have had to tell Ninny about Frank Bennett?
