Most Underrated Movie Of 1991

The Five Heartbeats is just that, the most underrated movie of 1991. It was basically overlooked at the box office, and even when I watch it today, the performances and the storyline are still very, very strong. The scene at the Apollo Theater will always be the best scene in the entire movie, along with the scene at church. Those two scenes always make my cry when I watch the movie.

There are times when African-Americans are complaining about how they are not properly represented in the movies as an influential and positive group of people, but when that motion picture comes along, we always somehow manage to miss it. This is true not only with this movie, but also with Spike Lee's 'Get On The Bus' as well. Again, this is not by fault of our own, it is also at that time these movies were in very, very limited release. In short, I am more appreciative of a really good movie whenever it comes along, whether I catch it at the movies or on DVD. This is just my way of saying I was very happy to have the opportunity to catch this rich and vibrant vision of a movie.

I agree with you. I still complain that this movie should've been at least nominated for an Oscar on so many levels. The story was great, the characters were great. The movie captured almost every emotion. It was funny, sad, dangerous, scary etc.

Oh well...you can't win them all.
