Can We Go There Tonight?

Venice!

What a great line. Performance. Movie.

What's the problem with movies today?

I'm glad you asked...

They fall into 2 categories:

'Indie'
'Hollywood'

So you can -never- make a movie like this... which has courage, but still has enough of a budget (and a desire) to please crowds

Wes Anderson comes close, but as great as he is, he doesn't swing for the seats like this. When Gilliam misses it's TERRIBLE, but when he connects... like this or Brazil it's -really- something.

It's tough for film makers these days to do original and creative material simply because movies have become damn expensive and studios are simply not willing to risk a lot on a fresh story. They want to keep things dumb and formulaic with name branding to appeal to the lowest breed. They figure the rest of the world will settle for hot dogs when steak could be on the menu, and don't get me wrong, sometimes I want a hot dog, but my tastes will always long for steaks first and foremost.

Someone eventually will take some risks though and they'll succeed tremendously, and the studios will take note. But someone has to break this mold Hollywood has fallen into first.

Finally I agree, this is a wonderful movie with some really great performances, and I love the camera work! Gilliam gets some awesome visuals, I think this movie is his best work.
