The Guy on the Motorcycle.
There's a scene when they're out on the date and some dude rides by on a motorcycle and says "Lydia!" I've never been able to figure out what that was about. Anyone know?

shareWow, I'm really curious to know that myself! I forgot all about that scene but yes I always wondered that too.
shareits like bit where they walk past the hobo on stilts, or the guy who's bleeding from the head in the asylum. I think its just Terry Gilliam doing what he does best, weirding us out and making us scratch our heads
great movie, arguably his best.
"Them syreens did this to Pete. They loved him up and turned him into a horny toad!"share
Agreed it seemed like the wonderfully absurd Gilliam "touch" or flourish" but the guy was running his bike up the sidewalk, like he was about one second from parking it in front of his apartment. This occured when Robin Williams had walked Amanda Plummer almost to her apartment.
Made sense to me on repeat viewings that they were neighbors.
Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't it the same man who is sitting in the restaurant, watching the group having fun towards the end of the evening? I think he was sitting the wrong way around on a chair, just watching them with amusement as the camera pans out and Parry starts to sing 'Lydia The Tatooed Lady' ...
I'm assuming it was the restaurant owner, finally off duty for the evening and enjoying the moment.
It's a lead in, into their conversation. The guy on the motorcycle is obviously someone Lydia has been with, and Parry then says so..........tell me more about yourself. She goes on to let us know she's been with a lot of different men, and has had lots of one night stands, in her quest to try and find true love, and someone who will stay with her. That dude on the bike is just one of her past one night stands. That's my take on it, anyway.

how is that obvious? and how does that make sense with the rest of the movie?
she said she was ignored when getting her nails done, everyone around her ignores her, shes not well liked, she doesn't even have friends. she is clumsy and kind of shy
SHE EVEN SAID SHE HAS NOT DATED A LOT... that's when the other woman says that she has been dating Longer than she has been driving
How can Lydia be sleeping around with all these men when she is so shy and doesn't even date? wtf
but she sleeps around with a lot of guys? I dont know, that doesn't make sense to me.
I took her conversation as being something she was very afraid of happening to her, not necessarily something that ALREADY happened to her
It's definitely possible that this has happened to her many times, she ran off because she liked Parry so much that she didn't want it to happen again. Also, she says to Anne specifically that she has never even had a "dating period," meaning a long term commitment.
You can absolutely sleep around and not date.
Don't forget that she is a bit bitchy so she is not as timid and fragile as one might assume. I think you're just sympathetic to her character. Nothing wrong with that.
I'm not saying that this was the director's intent for the biker, just responding to your post.
People hate what's popular and people jump on bandwagons. The rest of us are in the middle. Done.
so Lydia was promiscuous? but that doesn't really make sense with the rest of the movie...

(I might be afraid of divorce but that doesn't mean I have been Divorced just because I have a fear of it)
Yes, I can't understand how could anyone that has actually seen the movie come to the conclusion that Lydia "slept around". It's preposterous.
Uless, of course, these characters are just kidding around... which is a distinct possibility.
"facts are stupid things" Ronald Reagan
I took it as Lidya's biggest fear. That when she found a guy he would use her and leave.
but that does not mean it has happened at all. for all we know she might only have had one other boyfriend in the past. it is not that hard to be

This is how I always interpreted the scene, but sleeping around was out of character for her. It's probably just a dude from her hood.
