THE SECRET TO ENJOYING THIS MOVIE

The secret to enjoying this movie is the WAY over the top craziness of Martin Short for which you MUST turn on your 'close captioning' to understand! I am surprised they didn't sub-title his role in the movie itself.
Funny how Steve Martin, the 'wild and crazy guy', settled into such safe, low-key roles - he is very likable but Martin Short makes the movie.

the easiest way to enjoy this is if you're a chick. Most guys aren't into these types of movies.

Just suspend belief basically.

Also I have said on other threads THIS IS A REMAKE OF A 1951 FATHER OF THE BRIDE. That script is excellent and this 1991 one was not changed as far as the father and mother parts. They got caught up in the whirlwind of planning and expense and as usual the dad gets left out except for the checkbook.

Sorry, but I have one child, a daughter and this is EXACTLY how our planning went and I thought the movie was realistic is some ways.
Of course in other ways it was way over the top.

But you do spend too much always. As for her leaving before seeing him, well that happened in the original and they stuck to it. It makes her phone call later so important and special!

Our daughter came downstairs (recep in hotel) with her husband and they ran thru all of the guests blowing bubbles and got into a horse drawn carriage. And she did NOT say goodbye to anyone then. Our goodbyes had been said during the recep ---

So it is not unrealistic to say that the bride can get away without a formal goodbye. It is pretty chaotic at the end.
