Several DVD sites have announced another DVD edition of 'The Double Life of Veronique', this time released by Image Entertainment and on sale February 12, 2008. How different could this one be in comparison with the Criterion Collection edition? Does anybody got more detailed info?
The page at Image Entertainment, www.image-entertainment.com/film.asp?ProjectID={36E7E3EB-EC40-4519-A17 6-9C0200CC1CD4}&BusinessUnitID={86E09B33-2863-432E-AFFA-D34EA992FE DF}&ProductID={CF2FE8D4-EA34-46E0-8905-9C0200CDF5D7}, indicates that this is a single-disc release. Image Entertainment does own Criterion, and my guess is that this release is just a lower-priced single-disc version of what Criterion released last year. Probably exactly the same as disc 1 of the Criterion package, at half the suggested retail price.
Has anyone seen this new version? I love all the extras in the Criterion disc. But I am slightly disappointed in the green color palette in that version, favored by the cinematographer Idziak. Kieslowski himself reportedly (according to the DVD interviews) favored the golden hued version, which I believe is the one I saw every time on the big screen, even as recently as 2 years ago (where I flew all the way to Berkeley during the Kieslowksi retrospective just to drink in the golden film twice!). It is also possible it is a difference between big and small screens, but I don't think so.
yes, i was struck by how much green was in the criterion release, as i remember it being more golden as well. though i had only ever seen it a few times when it first came out. if kieslowski did indeed prefer the "golden" version, then they should both be presented (perhaps the blu-ray release?). but this might be a good way to do it-- the deluxe criterion "green" version and the single disc "golden" version.
either way, it's the most beautiful cinematography i have ever seen, and absolutely one of my very favorite films.
