running the ring under her eye
Does anyone know the significance of her running the ring under her eye?

shareDon't rings, circles, and mandalas usually indicate wholeness and inter-connections? I get the impression most people think there is some sort of connection between Weronika and Veronique. Maybe for them the rings represent each girl getting in touch somehow with the other. But there is an opposite interpretation: when each girl wipes one of her eyes with a ring, she is maybe trying to clear what is left of her vision in that eye, but soon thereafter half of her life seems to wither away, as if she's completely lost half of her vision. (W wipes her left eye, and V, her right eye.)
shareHi, I asked the same question to my girlfriend. She is from Poland and they believe that when you get a bit of dust in you eye, rubbing a gold ring (or any other thing made out of gold) will get rid of it. This belief in the magical properties of objects seems to fit very well the personality of Weronika; she uses it when a bit of make up goes into her eye. Later on in the movie we see Veronique doing the same thing but in my opinion she is replicating the Weronika’s gesture rather than using it to clean her eyes.
I hope this helps. Thanks
Rubbing a gold object (usually a ring happens to be most handy, but the shape doesn't matter) against the eyelid is a (very well-known in Poland) folk cure against a stye that's starting.
I once read that there actually is a scientific background for it: apparently when you rub some metal against it, it helps the stye to disperse. And gold, when rubbed, warms up to a higher temperature than most other metals.
When I was a child, I've had this method recommended many times by older family members. Strangely enough, it actually always worked. :-o
i'm with triskell, i remember this from my childhood here in america, especially from the older members of my family.
shareI agree with Triskell. I'm cuban, my grandmother would do the same thing, rub a ring along the eye lid to keep the stye from swelling.
