They picked the wrong title for this movie

I mean very little of the movie actually has to do with the babysitter being dead.

reply

I beg to differ...

Had they immediately told their mother that she was dead, she would've came back immediately...

And then we wouldn't have this awesome movie!

reply

Working Girl would be a good one if it wasn't already taken.

Idk, I think this movie is just so good on its on that the title doesn't even matter. It's kind of a fun/memorable title, too.

Just stumbled onto some trivia- the original title was supposed to be The Real World.

I wonder why they changed the title?

I'm open! There's just nothing in there!

reply

In early scripts of this movie, it had a lot more to do with the kids being suspects of the baby sitter being dead. Each had their own reason.

They were unable to use the Real World since MTV had series of the same name beginning around that time.

let's think of some alternative titles , either serious or stupid, lol !

" Lessons in life "

" What happens when Mom goes on vacation "

I think " Reality bites " and " Working girl " would have been good titles too, if they weren't already taken.Well actually " Reality bites " hadn't been made then, so they could have used that title first for this film !.Or they could have changed " Working girl " to " Career woman " ( one of Sue Ellen's lines is " Who cares? I'm a career woman now " ).

Maybe they could have changed the " Real world " title to " Kids in the real world ", or " The Crandalls in the real world " .

" Don't tell Mom Sue Ellen is in charge ! ".

" Don't tell Mom the kids are alone ! "

" Sue Ellen's scam " or " Sue Ellens scheme ". Although that might have given too much of the story away.

" Dont let Mom find out ! ".

" This aint no perfect world ", after the song in the film.

"Metallica Breath"

LOL @ PremRaj

this is kind of a b movie title, where the title has nothing to do with the movie. still the title works.

Why couldn't they use the title "Real World"? This was filmed in 1990 and released in 1991, a year before MTV's The Real World debuted. Did MTV own the rights to that title that far back?

reply

I think the title they used is perfect! It sounded comical, just like the film, and didn't give anything away. But most importantly, it's catchy. The Real World sounded too dramatic, and some of those mentioned above also sounded too dramatic, or simply not catchy.

reply

Without the title, I probably never would've heard of this movie. My grandfather bought it for me as a 10th birthday present based on the title...thought it'd be a fun, cute movie, I guess. In fact, he wrote on the gift tag, "Don't tell your mom I bought you this."

Besides being catchy, it does reflect the premise of the movie: without the babysitter being dead, they wouldn't have been on their own for the summer. But in order to prevent their mom coming home prematurely and ruining the fun, they had to lie to a lot of people, including her.

I think the title is perfect :)

I agree. When you watch the end of the movie, you forget there was even a babysitter

reply

Right on top of that Rose

I think Its a good title

Such a great title

reply

Actually everything to do, and how they grow as individuals, is due to that secret being kept. Therefore it's a great title.

reply

It’s a great title, but only gives away that the babysitter is dead :D. So, it’s a spoiler.

reply

But it happens early in the movie, which isn't all about the babysitter's death. Heck, the trailer/TV spots and reviews gave that away, as well, so it was no big spoiler.
