What If Everyone Really Loved Their Job?
I had never considered this, but this movie has.
“Was this pre-made?” Daniel is suspicious of his instantly-fabricated breakfast order, as we earthlings would be.
“No, this was made just for you,” says the waitress earnestly, looking him in the eye. “Fresh and delicious!”
A just-arrived bleary-eyed Daniel reaches compulsively for a robe pocket to get a tip but there is no pocket and no money. “I’d be surprised if you found anything in there,” says the bellman in a kind voice. “But I appreciate the thought.”
Even us Little Brains come across people like this now and then — workers in “menial” jobs who genuinely seem to love their work and care about those in their charge. But a whole city full? This movie considers that wonderful possibility, even as it shows most of us without Julia’s personality wouldn’t be ready for it.
I’d like to think there’s another world out there, filled with creatures just like us but smarter. Smart enough to know that any job can be done well, with joie de vivre and kindness. That all work matters and can touch lives.
I think that place would be the real heaven.
