going forward

I thought it was interesting how the movie carried the message that being reincarnated means you failed to show courage in your past life, and that "moving forward" is better than getting to spend more time on earth.

Also, is it just me, or did Meryl Streep look REALLY GOOD in her white tunic?

reply

Well... think about it kind of like Groundhog Day... After a certain point in time, you're ready to move on. You haven't done it all, but if you've done it admirably, then you've done enough.

However, I also found it interesting that Streep's past lives were all Knights, etc. And they were all shown doing couragous actions. How exactly did they not get reincarnated?

reply

I have wondered the same thing each time I whatch this film. Why is it that Streep's couragous past lives were not enough to advance her. I also want to stand up and b*tch slap Daniel every time I see the see where he turns her down.

reply

The previous incarnations did advance her- to the state she was at in the movie.
It's a long process over many lives, and bit by bit one advances...Maybe the courageous previous incarnations still had major problems, which she has now worked through....

reply

Probably true, but first and foremost, of course, her past lives were merely humorous counterpoint to the past lives of Brook's character.

Her couragousness in her past lives may have not been enough to get rid of her fear. Remember fear being the important thing that keeps "little brains" going back to earth. "I got rid of my fear and I got smarter." (Rip Torn). I just wanted to say and I did not realize this until many years later that Daniel was looking at nine days from his life and the ninth day was when he was returning to earth and instead jumps from the tram and boards the tram Julia is on. His experience in Judgement City was his own process of compelling him to move forward. It wasn't about what he had done in the past. It was intended to view that moment that is how they were all already all there watching him. He was really being judged on that pinnacle moment and the process was to get him to that point. I thought Brooks was a genius even before this realization but now I am sure of it.

reply

Actually, when Daniel was being watched jumping onto Julia's tram, that would technically be his 13th day.

He already had 9 days of review, plus the compilation of bad judgments and "some, just stupid", PLUS the two summation days.
