'I was trapped near the intercircle of fault'

Anybody want to hazard a guess at what Rip Torn's big brain was trying to explain to Daniel? I love that line because it is so unintelligible, yet intriguing.

I watched this hilarious, amazing film again on demand recently, for about the 15th time. I think Albert Brooks is extremely underrated, at least by the mainstream. He's like a poor man's Woody Allen in some ways.

Actually, Bob Diamond says he was trapped at the "Inner Circle of Thought". Just some big brain meditation, I always thought!

I thought fault as well.

Watching the movie right now, subtitles say it's Inner Circle of Thought.

"I was trapped near the inner circle of thought"

It's just Rip Torns accent that makes you think he says "Fault" because he says "thought" like "fought"

I finally found the clip...he did say "I was trapped near the inner circle of fault." Click on the link to watch, it's happens approximately 30 seconds in to the video:

No, he certainly did not. "Thought" is correct - please don't go around "confirming" incorrect assertions - it's counterproductive!

Interesting, thids is one of my fav,. movies, and I;ve seen it many times. I always thought he said "inner cicle of fault". Not saying that is what he said, just the way I've heard it. I'll have to take another (close) look now.

As for what it meant, I'm afraid that we don't use enough of our brains to ever understand.

I've always related to that line...kind of like when people are talking to you, or you're watching a movie and all of a sudden you start meditating on something that happened in your life, whether recent or otherwise and totally lose track of where you are at the present moment. It could take seconds or even minutes to snap out of it.

Of course, that's just the opinion of someone who went to the 'Gifted' School!

"We're trying to entertain them, Chazz, not kill 'em!"

That's what little brains do!

It was BS. Cover for some screw up. The residents were never being totally truthful to the "little brains" so my guess is that he got drunk and was too hung over to work that day.

Say something weird and the dead people will drop it.

"Are you in the army?"
"No man, I just have short hair."

Works for me! tanx Dignan!

I'm watching right now on Encore HD. Rewound dvr and it says thought. Replayed it 3 times. I thought is was fault initially. I would have bet on it, but it's thought.

Inner circle of fault is more interesting. Thought makes more sense.

"I believe in coincidences, I just don't trust them." Source debatable.

reply

I always thought it was "Inner Circle of Fault" myself, and just because subtitles say "thought" is not definitive proof. I've seen several examples of bad subtitling/closed-captioning. Sometimes they are lifted right from the screenplay, but too often they are not, or there are mistakes.

I'll admit it could be either one, though. I just think "Fault" is funnier, harder to understand (which is the point) and more obscure. So I'll continue to believe in it until I hear Albert Brooks or Rip Torn say otherwise.

The war is not meant to be won... it is meant to be continuous.

reply

Agreed, it seems to me some of these closed captioning systems are automated. I could be wrong, but that's how it seems.

I just watched it and his line was, 'I was trapped near the inner circle of fault'... It was a great scene as Albert Brooks just looked at him as if he said something in Chinese. I agree this is movie making at it finest. No explicit sex, violence or language. Just great story telling and acting.

reply

also thought it was fault. subtitles arent always correct....

reply

The script is supposedly available for purchase, if anyone's that interested.

It is the Inner Circle Of Thought. I refuse to pay $14 (or even 14 cents) just to confirm I was right.
Closed captions don't always provide 100% accurate information. In this case, it did.
And how "Thought" makes the reference any less obscure or confusing is beyond me.
So again. Not "intercircle" and not "fault".
INNER Circle of THOUGHT.
Make of that what you will.
