Buck Henry

Why was he in this movie? He didn't do anything when he was the lawyer...so why slow the story down?

I think he was in the movie because the mere idea of having only 4 days to defend your life and that on one of the days you have an inadequate lawyer defending you. is a funny concept the line "And you didn't want want to toot your own horn..." is stated frequently among my family. Im very thankful that Buck was in the movie.

The thing is that the Bob Diamond's replacement lawyer wasn't inadequate. He already felt that Daniel was doomed and going back to Earth. He knew Daniel hadn't moved passed his fear. Notice when Daniel asks if he wasn't going to say anything in his defense, the lawyer ask him if HE wants to talk.

Let's face it, until he decided to jump off that tram, Daniel was not worthy of a big brain.

Oh man I completely disagree with the original post. I thought the Buck Henry part was the funniest in the film.

The reason it was there is because this is a comedy, and frustration is funny, especially when it deals with neurotic characters like Brooks. And it was frustrating to have a replacement lawyer who did nothing for him.

I completely disagree. If you really think about it, Daniel had his best trial day with Buck Henry as his lawyer. Henry encourages Daniel to speak for himself and, as a result, he makes a persuasive argument AGAINST the prosecution's case (about how "fear" did or didn't influence his disastrous investment).

Henry's character was smart enough to know when NOT to talk. It's subtle but it's there.
