City Slickers, Double Jeopardy, Greedy, or Hero

These four movies seem similar in that they're undeservedly low-rated on IMDB.

1. Greedy 6.0. Greedy is an underrated, extremely funny comedy. The interaction between the four greedy cousins is just brilliant. Everyone is very funny but Phil Hartman almost steals the show.

2. Hero 6.3. Dustin Hoffman plays a small-time crook to perfection. I don't know why he didn't get an Oscar nomination or why this movie is so unknown.

3. Double Jeopardy 6.2. Tommy Lee Jones chasing Ashley Judd across the country. It's like The Fugitive but it's better. It has everything including a controversial legal point. A great ending.

4. City Slickers 6.7. A great story featuring Billy Crystal and Jack Palance. Jack's character (Curly) dying while still on his horse was inspired. Many great lines.

My vote among these four vastly underrated movies:

Double Jeopardy. Many great action scenes, a jail sentence for murdering her still-alive husband, an ingenious ploy regarding paintings by Kandinsky. You thought George Sanders was the best playing a slimy character? Well, he's great but upcoming actors should be required to watch Bruce Greenwood's role in the beginning of the film. He makes you hate him without doing or saying anything bad.

I haven't seen 'Double Jeopardy' but I've seen the other three films and I definitely think that although all of them have been underrated in terms of IMDb scores, the 'City Slickers' one is the most egregious. 'Hero' and 'Greedy' are enjoyable and fun but both very flawed and arguably less than the sum of their parts, whereas 'City Slickers' is a joy from beginning to end. It's a well told story with great, relatable, three-dimensional characters and a decent mix of laughs, poignancy, tension (during the river scene) and heart-warming moments.

It's a shame that we don't see these types of comedies much anymore. Back in the summer of 1991 you had stuff like this, 'Soapdish', 'What About Bob?' and 'Doc Hollywood', as well as smart, non-gross spoofs like 'Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear' and 'Hot Shots'. 1988, 1989 and 1990 also had great family-friendly, smartly-told, non-crude comedies. However, since the late 90s/early 00s most mainstream comedies, apart from the Edgar Wright 'Cornetto' films (and even they're pitched at an audience of a certain age), are either 'adult' and crude, or childish and infantile. There's few, if any, of those sweet smart comedies that Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Tom Hanks and Bill Murray used to specialise in.

I also liked the way all three friends "grew" during the cattle drive in "City Slickers." Arguably, Phil grew the most. From a hen-pecked, insecure, just divorced man, remember him drawing a gun at Clay/Cookie and actually firing a shot.
