I LOVE THIS MOVIE BUT............

hmmm there always seems to be a BUT! LOL!

City Slickers is one of my favorite movies of all time! I have watch it over and over again. It touches me on so many levels. In most great movies people can easliy identify with one of the main characters. With City Slickers I can identify with all three of the main characters.

When I was very young my father was out of my life very much like Ed Furillo's ( Bruno Kirby) was. In 1990 I went though a painful divorce very much like Phil Berquist ( Daniel Stern ). And in 1991 when this movie came out I turned 39 and was questioning whether my life made any sense to me and whether it was worth it, and I felt lost very much like Mitch Robbins ( Billy Crystal ).

I still laugh and cry at the darn thing and it still reinforces the lessons about life it teaches me. I love it so much.

Every single character, even some of the minor roles, are so real to me, which I think is important to a great movie. Every character, that is, except two. They are secondary characters so their behavoir in the movie doesn't seem to be that important to the enjoyment of the movie. I overlook it but it is still a small problem to me.

I am speaking of the the two hired hands, Jeff and T.R.

They are written into the script as adversaries for our heroes so it was deemed unnecessary to flesh out their characters. I am guessing. But I think it would have helped the story to develop these two characters a little more than they did. They are just not beliveable to me at all.

Jeff and T.R. never seem to be worried about losing their job. I find that very curious. If this is the way they behave towards the guests on this cattle drive, what about other drives? I can't believe this is the first time this has happened with them? Why haven't they been fired long before now? And when Jeff and T.R. start a fight with Ed and Mitch why does Curly just threaten Jeff and T.R., instead of just firing them? Isn't Curly the Trail BOSS? Isn't this what Trail Bosses do, fire people? At the very least Curly should have reported their actions to Mr. Stone and let him make the decision.

And just a side note to this. Jeff and T.R. never appear drunk to me. At least not at the ranch they don't. Maybe this weakness was with the actors or the director, not sure.

However, I think this is a teeny tiny little mistake in an otherwise great movie.

I agree with your sentiments but it was hard to read your post with so many misspellings, especially of the word "characters".

Other than that, yes, I wondered about the very same issues with the two ranch-hands.

Hey nagmashdriver,

You aren't Mrs. Thorton my 10th grade English teacher? She was always on my case about my spelling too! LOL!

I corrected the misspellings. But I found only two. "Character" which you pointed out and "unnecessary". Were there any others?

Spelling was never my strong suit and I wish IMDB had Spell Check because it sure would help dumb guys like me. LOL

Thanks for pointing out my errors. It doesn't seem right to criticize mistakes in something when you make so many mistakes yourself.

THANK GOD FOR THE PROOFREADERS! LOL!

No, not Mrs. Thorton but MISTER Thorton! Bawahahahahahaha!
