Bread slices

What was the point of the bread slices? At first it looked like they were passing around a stack of bread as if they were taking from it. Then in one seen I noticed they were adding to it. Why? What did I miss?

Thanks for asking- I have the same question. I never could figure out what they were doing with the slices.

Because it was "white" Bread

I wondered the same thing. I almost wonder if a scene was cut out of the movie that explained this.
