This is an exceptional movie

I know it isn't in the top 250 or whatever, but that list is pretty stupid anyway IMO. There are plenty of movies in there that shouldn't be close to that list and others that aren't in it (like this one) that should be. I've never lived in the ghetto but I know this movie definitely hits home for ones that do. Anyway, lovely movie.

Stupid movie

I feel like time hasn't been kind to it - the intended "serious" message gets lost in the gangsta characters and imagery. I just recently re-watched it and I couldn't help but think of the Wayans comedy spoof the whole time.

Yup. One of the best dramas I've ever seen.

After rewatching the film since it was initially released it actually has improved over time.

I thought this was one of the more powerful movies I've ever seen. I liked Silence of the Lambs but when it was over, I didn't feel the same sort of emotional exhaustion I felt after this movie. To me it would have been a much better pick for the Oscar.
And for the record, I think Singleton pointed the finger as much at the gangs for perpetuating violence as he does at white business for contributing. When opposing gangs got in shootouts at the movie theater, I doubt he shrugged and said "Hey, that was Whitey's fault." I'm sure he was pretty pissed. Especially if it happened AFTER the movie.
