Thought it was gang retaliation or something but was the guys that shot Doughboy's brother? I didn't see much of any "gangs" in this movie even in the prime of gangs in Los Angeles south central in the 80's and 90's. I just thought the whole thing started with just some hot head jerk (probably a drug dealer) intentionally starting *beep* with Doughboy's brother for no reason to make himself respected or some *beep*

shareNo, OP. The Bloods and the Crips were the gangs in this film. Ferris (the leader of the Blood set) started an altercation by deliberately bumping into Ricky. Ricky was killed for standing up to Ferris and because Doughboy and Ferris were enemies. As for how and why he was killed, I imagine Doughboy was shot. By who? The remaining thugs from Ferris' set.

Tre and the main characters live in a Crip neighborhood, people calling each other "cuz" which is a Crip thing.
Ferris and his crew are obviously Bloods, looking at their clothes and one of them (the shooter, a real life Blood who is dead now) calls Doughboy and their group "crabs", a derogatory term for Crips
The cop also names a couple gangs when he is threatening Tre, saying he looks like he's in Crenshaw Mafia or Rolling 60s.
I thought the epilogue reveals that Doughboy is murdered two weeks later in retaliation for Ferris and his gang's deaths, underlining the continual cycle of urban violence in the hood. You just have to assume it's the Bloods striking back.🐭
shareYeah it's probably something like that. But also, it's not really important who kills him. The movie sends the message that living a crime life will eventually put you out. It didn't even have to be revenge. It could have simply been a drugdeal gone wrong, or something as little as fighting over a parking.
