Where did Rufus go? (timeline goof?)

Okay, so Rufus throws his guitar at the phone booth and travels through the circuits of time after Evil Bill & Ted.

Then we see Pam Grier allow Bill & Ted into the Battle of the Bands. (We later learn this was apparently Rufus in disguise.)

Then Evil Bill & Ted arrive in 1991 at the Circle K. Rufus' guitar is stuck on the booth, but Rufus himself is nowhere to be found.

So... where did he go?

And although sure, with later time travel, he could have gone back and become Pam Grier before Evil B&T arrived, but it seems probably more of an editing error messing up the timeline.

I like this movie, but man it's sloppy. De Nomolos' second gun just magically appearing in his hand makes no sense either. It's a real turn-off-your-brain and enjoy the silliness movie.
