IMO, because it was sort of her come back from Three's Company to Prime Time TV. I always thought it was basically her show and they just decided to use the family angle as a platform. I watch this show for nostalgia (I was 12 when it first aired), but it really doesn't do much for me.
Im watching re-runs on the hub channel. I see what your saying but the step by step suited the show better.
shareTo be honest it was just as much of a Patrick Duffy vehicle as it was hers. He was no less involved than she was over the course of the whole run of the series and according to Christine Lakin directed a third of the episodes.
shareIt was a vehicle for both her and Patrick Duffy. Thank god though that the kids were good actors because a show like this in the daunted 00's decade would have had the kids act like idiots and EVERY episode would have focused entirely on the adults.

You could have easily called Brothers & Sisters the Sally Field show. A show that truly has an ensemble cast is rare.

She made the show in my opinion! Her talent and good looks make any show great. The best episodes are the ones that focus on her. It does get a little over the top when everyone on the show constantly talks about how sexy she is a talks about her boobs.
