What happened to the other two parents of the kids?? Was there every any mention?

I think Carol was widowed, but Frank was divorced. I seem to remember an episode where Frank said his wife left him, and he got the kids.

Carol's husband left her. I remember her referencing it in the episode where Jean-Luc was going to cut/style Hillary Clinton's hair.

"When my husband left me, he said he thought I was stupid, and for a long time I believed it."
