I thought the show took place in California but in a few episodes it snows, so maybe Northern California? I also remember in one episode, where Angelica was moving, it was said that Didi, Tommy, and Stu were originally from Akron, which is a city in Ohio, they also go to Ohio in a family reunion episode.

The real city is spelled Yucaipa and it's in the san Bernadino county right off of interstate 10

I believe Grampa also has a California license plate that reads "I'm Old". They also drive to Vegas which I guess they could have done from anywhere, but still more likely from closer proximity.
