Betty and Howard beards for one another?

I know women can be masculine and men feminine without being gay, and that gay people (like myself) can be masculine and lesbians feminine. But usually when it's done on a show like this it's kind of a gay joke. The reason I bring it up is because one episode Howard is mentioned as being out camping with his 'male bonding group.' So, do you think they were originally conceived as gay playing straight? Kind of like Will and Jada?

If you really think about it, it's self-explanatory why Betty often hung out with Didi. However, I like to think that maybe they were just role reversals for gender stereotypes.

That's what I originally hoped for too. And now that I think about it I do remember in the episode 'Twins Pique' Howard had a Playboy in his office drawer...
