I was 11 years old when this show first aired on TV ....and I was 14 when it finally got canceled.
And I can honestly say, that even though a lot of people really liked this show.....I couldn't stand it.
I didn't like the way that the baby dinosaur behaved....
I didn't like the father dinosaur....
I didn't like the father dinosaur's boss....
This show just never appealed to me. At the time, I was much more of a Simpsons fan and I think Married with Children was still on- it was good for its time.
I just didn't like the Dad.... he seemed like a typical sitcom Dad but he was a dinosaur.
And if memory serves me correctly..... didn't they start dubbing in canned-laughter? That really bothered me, because it sounded completely cheesy, like in one of those sitcoms from the 1960's.
Dinosaurs wasn't funny to me, I would sometimes leave it on out of boredom but I wasn't really a fan of it.
Hmm I think if I'd have been 11 I would not have really "got it" but now being 20 I really like it and think it is clever the way it deals with political issues. Funnily enough Baby was the ONLY baby in televison that I did not dislike (I hate Stewie I hate Maggie etc) though I do agree I do not like the father - not just because he's typical sictom dad but there was something very irritating about his voice especially his chuckle.
I was 9 when I first saw this show and I fell in love with it instantly and drove my parents crazy telling them about all the episodes and all the funny stuff the Baby did. My mom did not like it when I was a kid but ironically we watch it almost every morning now when we eat breakfast together.
I sort of liked it. I think the Simpsons and Married with Children are much better shows, but dinosaurs had it's moments. It was actually quite clever and dealt with some very heavy stuff all disguised as a children's show. On top of my head: - They had an episode about teen females developing their chests (but in the show, it was the female's tail, not chest) - One about steroids and peer pressure (but it was urchins or something) - One about sex (the mating dance thing), complete with a masturbation joke! - One about euthanasia (when they were supposed to throw grandma on a tar pit) - And of course, the infamous ending, which deals with man-made environmental disasters (global warming? nuclear winter? take your pick!). I hated the baby though. I think I didn't enjoy the show as much since most characters were either unlikeable or generic (for me, good characters are everything).
"disguised as a children's show" Except it wasn't. In one episode in the first season or at the start of the second Robbie (the son) breaks the fourth wall and calls it "An adult themed sitcom". It aired at 8PM. It was not a kids show.

You are misremembering everything so badly, it's not even funny!
Of course it was a kid's show--or a family show, rather. Dinosaurs was part of the "TGIF" family and kid-friendly TV show block on ABC that ran for years Friday nights starting at 8PM. I don't remember all of the shows that ran during this block, but they included Family Matters, Full House, Perfect Strangers and Step by Step. Dinosaurs was definitely geared towards kids and families; otherwise, it wouldn't have ever been part of that block. That doesn't mean that it didn't have any subversive humor catering to adults, but it was a kids's show, no question. I don't think it ever aired at 8, either. If I remember correctly, it was always the very last show to round out TGIF.
Fidzle is right. Robbie does break the fourth wall and refer to the show as an Adult themed sitcom in the 2nd season. I only know this because I just watched that episode on Netflix.
It was geared towards families, with humor catering towards both adults and kids. Like the Simpsons, some of the material at the time was considered "edgy". But because television has become so much more provocative over time it's rather tame now. Though I do think the messages are still relevant.
I agree. I was really really young(5-6) when this show came out and I remember it being on TGIF at one point when I was like 8.This show was corny and I remembered disliking it. I hated the baby dinosaur the most but the father Dinosaur was next. The sister dinosaur was so annoying and talked extra white. I never even really understood what it was about.
I absolutely loved this show and think it's one of the most underrated shows in TV history. I can still remember the finale to this day. It was so sad, and yet so clever at the same time.
