why I love this movie

Treasure Island, and Kidnapped, were the first real books I read all the way through myself. Both in 4th grade. I have read both at least 6 times each, theres no way to be sure. I also have seen the Disney versions of both countless times. When I saw this movie however, I had deja vu. FROM THE BOOK. I never thought I would have that kind of feeling in a movie. It's like the people who made it knew exactly how everyone would visualize it, and made it happen. even the actors, especially captian smollet, looked just as I imagined them. I have only seen this one once, I rented in in tahoe one time. But if they released it, I would by a copy, then one for all my relatives, and say read the book, watch this, and tell me it's not perfect.

Amen to that! (As Long John would say...)

I've got this on VHS, found it in a little shop in a tiny English seaside town, and I honestly can't find words to describe the joy I felt upon discovering it... My friend, who was with me on that lucky day, must have thought I had lost my mind or something.
And I have to admit that I know all the dialogue by heart, which makes me think I might have watched it too often...
Easily the best movie adaptation of a novel I have ever seen!!!

oh yeah. when i first saw it I said the line at the same time Jim did : "One more step Mr. sands, and I'll blow your brains out." Best line to only be in this version.

I also remember this line (although it's "Mr. Hands" [Israel Hands])! As a kid this was my favorite part - I suppose it's still my favorite part, even though I like the movie as a whole. Each time I see it I'm really impressed with all the little details that went into it.

Still not on DVD... :(

amen to that, too! *g*
everybody thinks i am mad because i cherish this movie so much but actually, its their loss. why it didnt get any oscars (hello-o, charlton heston gave the performance of his lifetime!) is beyond me.
whe i happened on the hispaniola moored in portsmouth harbour and OPEN TO VISITORS i went mental. it was one of the happiest days of my life. for eastewr i am planning a trip to bristol and go on the "treasure island trail" - cant wait!!! :-)

Why has Edward Woodward got four 'd's' in his name?
Because otherwise he'd be Ewar Woowar.

reply

Shiver me timbers! I can't believe you got to see the Hispaniola!!!!
Lucky you! *jealous*

I've said it before and I'll say it again: this movie has made my life!
I fell in love with the book when I was little and never thought there was a film version that would do it justice, but this is simply incredible and perfect!
Thanks so much Mr Fraser C. Heston!!!!!

I'm 'more of a dirty blonde'...

Easily the best version, by a long way. This movie really captures the spirit of Stevenson's novel. You can almost smell and taste the seaweed!
Heston is perfect as Long John Silver and Oliver Reed is in fine form, also.

You rented it in Tahoe? Is that the same version that rents out in other places?
