Best Made for TV movie ever?

Heston, Oliver Reed, Christopher Lee, James Cosmo, and of course Christian Bale who wasn't yet a star, but was this movie intended to be a made for TV film? This film definitly did not have the fake cheesy prop look of most made for TV films. It was first rate, with first rate acting.

I guess Ted Turner has deep pockets and thought he could make more money by just playing it on TNT? Or did the theaters not want to buy it?

Anyway, I think this was by far the best TV movie I have ever seen.

Tough call between this and Gulliver's Travels (1996)

I have to agree with you all, one of the best made films I have seen for a long time. Nice to watch Charlton Heston without an American Accent ! Loved the film.

The best films are made in an intellengent format

The original 'Lonesome Dove' was spectacular too.

Let them quake in their boots — Judge Turpin and the beadle — for their hour has come.

One of my ALL time favorite movies ever--could have been made for the big screen-it was that good!
C.Heston is awesome and C. Bale is perfect as Jim Hawkins--love, love, love this movie!

It will hopefully get a release next year through the Warner Archives according to a poster here on this board. I can't wait to order my copy!

This just may be the best made for TV movie ever. Horatio Hornblower ranks up there as well, as do the sequels.

The U.S. is the only place where it screened on TV. In most other countries it was a theatrical release.

reply

That would probably explain it.

I know I can't believe a movie with such a brilliant cast was meant to be or TV only... weird.

This is my favorite movie from my childhood, along with Clash of the Titans and Simbad and the Eye of the Tiger :)

I mean no offense but I thought it was pretty bad for a TV movie, could've been so much cooler if they made it for the big screen. I watched it and just couldn't get into it, I thought it pretty bad.

You are mistaken. Perhaps by now, nine years after your post, your taste has improved.

The writing, production, casting, acting, music, cinematography, and everything else about this movie are excellent. It's so rich and so good, it's hard to believe it's a tv movie. I love the 1934 version with Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper, but this version with Heston is probably the best.
