When did Terry Noonan go to the police academy???? No one from the neighborhood noticed? I know he said he was a cop up in Boston but when did he join the police force?
And he shows up looking almost EXACTLY the same and nobody recognized him right off???
Yeah, it is weird because it seems like he was a cop before going away to Boston judging by that fake shootout with the cops at the start of the movie.
About people not recognizing him, I think that Jackie was just messing around when he first saw him and Kathleen wasn't even paying attention to who Jackie was with because she didn't care about those people. No one knew if and when he was coming back so she didn't have reason to expect anything, so I think that was all fine.
I dont know if you guys really got this but the fake shootout took place in the present, as in when he was in boston pd, i dont know what gave you the ideas that this scene took place before he left to boston, so the answer to the original question, he left home to boston and became a cop, simple as that. The whole movie takes place during his time in new york undercover, no unseen inbetweens.
