Yes! I adore Sean Penn (my fav all-time actor) and I think he's great in this movie but Gary Oldman is even better! Every single line was just delivered to a T.
The scene in the church: I wanna make Stevie a saint...
That scene has always been stuck in my head since the movie came out. I was plagued with its rememberance and not knowing the name of the film. At the time I was only in 1st grade when I first saw it on video; I was so glad when I caught this film on televison a couple of years ago and finally found out the name of it. And lo and behold to find that that line was delivered by my favorite actor, so I guess you can say I've been a fan of Gary Oldman since I was about 7 or 8.
we won't go that far....lol, I agree his performance was amazing, but don't 4get andy and red's performance in shawshank, brando, pacino, and deniro in the godfather, deniro's performance in taxi driver...
Jackie Nicholson gets my vote. The Shining, One Flew Over The Cukoo's Nest, Batman, anything basically.
This film is the most watchable film I own out of about 300 films, I've seen it too many times to confess. It's absolutely riveting and a true powerhouse of a movie, a gangster flick in every sense of the word! Top class!
The best thing being is you always end up being the one to say to a mate 'Have you seen State Of Grace?' then get the chance to introduce them to one of the best films ever made. It's timeless.
'You believe in angels and saints and that there's such a thing as a State Of Grace, but it's got nothing to do with reality.'
It's interesting to note that James Russo who played De Marco (the guy with Penn during the phoney shootout at the beginning) isn't credited anywhere for his part. Not on the DVD, Video, or any version. Anyone know why? Usually this is because the actor is angry because some of his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. Anyone know the truth?
He was awesome in this film and should have received the recognition he deserved for such a powerful performance. He overshadowed everyone in this film. That is saying something too because he was in the company of some Hollywood heavyweights here; Sean Penn, Ed Harris and Robin Wright Penn.
This has to be one of the most underrated movies of ALL time. And what about Gary Oldman's performance as a new Yorker? Not bad for a boy from east London!
Lol I couldn't stop giggling every time Gary Oldman was on, he is brilliant. The whole scene with the hands in the freezer was hilarious! I loved both him and Sean Penn equally, though.
i love this movie. oldman at his best. too bad this movie was overshadowed by similar type classics around that time. it deserved more respect. oldman deserved an award. after morgan freeman,he may be my favorite actor.
Yeah I agree with all of you I thought Sean Penn was great, so was Ed Harris and Robin Wright but someone im surprised hasn't gotten a real mention for his Brilliant performance was Joe Viterelli (first time performance mind you). But theres no question Gary Oldman stole the show with his unbeatable performance. Man i love this movie!!.
