I don't see the similarities. Jane Fonda's character in Stanley & Iris isn't as reluctant and much more sweeter than Michelle Pfeiffer's character in Frankie & Johnny. I also feel as if Stanley & Iris is a nicer story and a better movie.
shareAlso, Frankie & Johnny was made a year AFTER Stanley & Iris, so the latter couldn't have been a remake.
shareAl-Pacino is not good when it comes to Romance unlike De Niro. Stanley and Iris has a great story-line plus great acting in comparison to Frankie & Johnny.
shareIn some ways this movie IS like Frankie & Johnny. It is also like the movie Marty from 1950's best picture. They are all about unglamorous and somewhat sad people past their prime who luckily find companionship and love. Frankie and Johnny was an award winning Off Broadway play staring Kathy Bates. A far cry from Michelle Pfeiffer. It's a great play when not done by Gary Marshall and beautiful people.
shareIts not a remake but an adaptation of a book based in the North of England and the screenplay focusses on a few characters. If only they could make a proper remake of this film.
