Good movie but there is an issue I have with it:

When Rocky's lawyer told him he could never get any commercial contracts that was totally nonsense, Rocky at the time was an American hero for defeating Drago, he could have had whatever contract he wanted.

reply

I wonder that too. No way that there was no other way for Rocky to make money. Even in those days a world famous boxer could make money maybe not boxing money but enough to not have move back in the old neighborhood again.

reply

Plus I have a feeling that someone, somewhere would have helped Rocky out. Heck Apollo's wife probably inherited the family fortune, she was probably beyond appreciative of what Rocky did it seems like she would have helped him out and yeah he could have gotten any commercial contract he wanted, again the guy was an American hero who pretty much everyone was celebrating the existence of.

reply

Apollo’s wife hated Rocky for not throwing the damn towel

reply

Drago threw the damn ref out of the way when he tried to stop the fight, do you seriously think that he would have stopped if Rocky threw the towel. Also what about Duke? He didn't do anything to try to stop it.

I also don't seem to remember a scene establishing any kind of dynamic between Rocky and Apollo's wife, but that would probably make the film deeper and they had no interest in that. Plus they'd probably have to cut one of the films 8 training montages and we gotta have those.

reply

Apollo’s wife hated Rocky for winning in Rocky II and making life miserable around the Creed house

reply

I seem to have missed that part, when was that established?

reply

When she yelled at Apollo for moping around the house in 2

reply

Sounded like she was irritated that her husband couldn't move on from his obsession, not so much that she was mad at Rocky. I mean Rocky just fought the match, he's not responsible for Apollo's emotional state.

reply

I think Apollo would beg to differ

reply

Right, Apollo was pissed that Rocky went the distance, I never saw any indication that his wife felt the same way or blamed Rocky for Apollo's obsession with him.

reply

Adonis mentions that his mother told him that she never spoke to Rocky after Apollo's funeral. But his eulogy was really nice. Rocky agrees with both of these statements.

reply

Gotcha, keep in mind I never saw Creed.

reply

Plus they'd probably have to cut one of the films 8 training montages and we gotta have those.

Agreed.

reply

Rocky had returned to his part II self where he sucked at doing commercials and public appearances.

reply

Ummmm that wasn’t the reason, the reason was they’d never be able to get any deals which is BS.

What are you saying that he just forgot how to read?

reply

Basically. When the issue of doing commercials comes up, Rocky says "I ain't no commercial kind of guy, I'm a fighter." This is a high contrast to his persona in Rocky III, where he loved all the fame and made lots of appearances and commercials. Yes, the assault charge comes up, but that would hardly be an issue for a celeb as big as Rocky would have been at the time. I feel it really just comes down to Rocky being made dumber to give his hard luck more credence.

reply

Yeah I feel they had to defy logic to move the plot in the direction they wanted to.

reply

Yeah.

At the beginning of Rocky 3, we see that Rocky is endorsing products, appearing on The Muppets etc. So I'm sure he could've made some money somehow.

What I always wondered though, was how he suddenly got so good at performing in commercials between the second one and the third one.

reply

It's quite simple he learned how to read, we saw in Part II that Adrian was helping him with it.

reply

After becoming champ was when the money started rolling in. It would be easy enough to get a publicist to help his appearance and manner.
