I didn't like parts of this movie because there were too many ways he could have gotten his money back. He could have gotten so many endorsement deals after fighting Drago. The royalties he already did have might have been sold off by thief of an accountant. He could have asked his friends for help. Its just like they made them outcasts, and on their own. Plus he had to own some of the rights from the televised fight with Drago. So I find it had to believe that they were that broke. I mean maybe not mansion money but something.

Yes, that would never happen in real life. Could you imagine Federer, CR7 or Tiger Woods in such situation? No way. THere would be one solution or another, but that would never happen. With Tyson happened something similar to Rocky, but Tyson went to jail and never had to go back to a lousy neighborhood, as far as I now.

Rocky had a lot of debts, that had to be paid off, so the house had to be sold off, and all the money he did have. Paulie had signed a "power of attorney" over to Rocky's accountant, who had squandered all of his money on real estate deals gone sour.

Rocky's head trauma and brain damage, meant he couldn't fight ever again, resulting him retiring. Sadly once he retired, it would have been difficult for him to get endorsement deals.

He was a beloved champion who just defeated a man who killed another beloved champ and he did it all on Christmas Day in Russia. Trust me, he could have gotten plenty of endorsements if he wanted them.

But it is a movie and Stallone had to find a way to get Rocky back in the old neighborhood.

Still didn't have to go the unconvincing bankrupt way. He could have Rocky retire and then open up Micky's Gym to still be around boxing and everything else plays out the same with Tommy showing up.

No, he didn't, Rocky did. Paulie didn't have anything to do with it, aside from being the messenger.

Doubt it, Rocky was an American hero at the time, he definitely could have gotten an endorsement deal retired or not.

No, Rocky did that himself. Paulie had fuckall to do with it (not to mention that Paulie signing the papers wouldn't legally mean anything anyway, no more than if some random guy off the street had signed the papers). All that Paulie did was relay a message from the accountant and hand Rocky the papers to sign. This is clearly stated in the movie.

Uh huh. Just like Mike Tyson has difficulty getting endorsement deals, or Michael Jordan, and so on, right?

Yeah no the biggest problem was that Rocky Jr. had to give away his lunch money to the bully at school otherwise he would get beat up.
That's how they went bankrupt.

The way Rocky goes broke is the most unconvincing part of the film. After beating Drago, Rocky would've been such a beloved American hero that he would've gotten tons of endorsement deals even if he couldn't fight again. But it is a movie and Stallone had to find a way to get Rocky back in the old neighborhood.

That's the part I don't get. How is it even remotely possible for a "brother-in-law" to be able to sign a power of attorney without first clearing it with the actual account owner?? In this case, Rocky or Adrian



I don't think it would matter at that point as the damage was already done.

Remember, they went after the accountant, but there was no way to get the money back.

Whatever the attorney did regarding Paulie's signature was tell the real estate guys that Paulie was the beneficiary just so he can get the deal to work.

As for who he made deals with, they may not have names of those dealers and thus couldn't retain Rocky's financial loss.

Paulie was lying to cover up what really happened as shown in the deleted scenes.

He fell in love with the robot, who used it's artificial intelligence to forge Rocko's signature to give power of attorney over to the "accountant" which was actually the robot. The Robot used all Rocky's money to leave town and start an empire. Paulie was dejected and had to cover up his heartbreak and being swindle by a machine.

It's very similar to the plot of Short Circuit 2. I think they modeled Bender from Futurama after the Robot from Rocky IV too.

Paulie didn't sign anything. They explained "The piece of paper Paulie had you (Rocky) sign, was not a request for an extension on your taxes, it was a blanket power of attorney." What happened was, the crooked accountant told Paulie "Have Rocky sign this, since you'll be in Russia. It's a request for an extension on his taxes, so he won't run foul of the IRS.", or something to that affect. Paulie, since he doesn't know a thing about money and finances, just takes his word for it, and gives it to Rocky to sign. That was right after Apollo was killed, and Rocky's head was in 100 different directions. He would have signed a permission slip to use Rocky Jr as a piñata, at that point, he was so screwed up. So, he takes Paulie's word, doesn't look over what he's signing, just signs it, because he's a got a fight to train for, and doesn't want to run foul of the IRS. Neither of them had the sense to ask Adrian to look at it, or she would have caught it in a hot second. So, that accountant played on Paulie's gullibility, and Rocky's preoccupation with the fight, to pull some shady *beep* Yes, it's all a stretch, but it's feasible. And they specifically mention Rocky can't do commercials, because of his past arrest from working for Gazzo, so that explains away why he didn't do commercials.

It isn't, which is why Paulie didn't sign it, Rocky did. Paulie didn't have anything to do with it, aside from being a messenger.

Paulie brought up the solution of endorsements during the meeting with the lawyers, but that was shot down quickly because of Rocky's criminal past working for Gazzo the loan shark. Of course, he had numerous endorsements at the beginning of Rocky III, but that was also a slightly different time when celebrity dirt wasn't as raked through as it was in the early 90s and onward.

Never made sense to me either. Don't the rich and famous claim bankruptcy in these cases and tend to go on living much the same way? I am sure he could have done endorsements as well as appearances and commentating on boxing matches, training etc.
