Surprised this wasn't a bigger movie

It's a cult classic and all that, but This should've been The Breakfast Club for the 90's. It's not a perfect movie, but it's one of those movies that just mostly clicks, no matter how old it is, or how many times you watch it. It feels a little ahead of its time. It was made in 1989/1990, but feels solid 90's.

It was a big Movie...
I just saw it for the first time, but have known of it all these years. It's a title that sticks in your head. I'm not sure how ahead of its time it was.

I always thought so as well. When it was first released it wasn't hyped much, and didn't get the attention I thought it deserved. Over the years it obtained a following, which is cool, but I agree, it seemed ahead of it's time. Very knowing and affecting, mostly to us disaffected teens of the 1990's.

In the late 80s/early 90s most big studios released the films they invested the most money into in June and July. It was not until Twister came out that the summer box office season really expanded.

Pump up the Volume was released in late August and there was little advertising behind it, although the reviews were decent.

Had they put some advertising into the film it could have done better. In the late 80s/early 90s word of mouth could drive a movie.
