There was a lot of evidence that would point to Mark as the culprit, most of which seemed to go unnoticed.
You already pointed out the radio equipment that he owned, which should have made his parents at least a little suspicious, but there should have been other clues, too.
By the time the police found the phone in the shed, this should have really been the last thing, but other evidence:
- He was a transfer student. That should have singled out a lot of the student body.
- He was likely the son of a school employee.
- When they got to the point of the phone in the shed, they should have really nailed it: which student is a transfer student who is the son of an employee and lives within a thousand yards from where we're standing?
