French Foreign Legion?

What is the french foreign legion equivalent to our armed forces?

reply

no, its like a special divison. The French Foreign Legion or the Légion Étrangère has been a unique and distinguished unit within the French Army since 1831. It takes its name from the fact that it is chiefly comprised of foreign fighters who after a term of 3 years may become French citizens.

so is it a well trained branch of France?

The Foriegn Legion has one advantage over the Special Forces... that is the fighters being effectively stateless during their service i.e. are COMPLETELY expendeble... that is the price that members pay to get a new start... that's why the Foreign Legion is populated by all manner of war criminals and deviants... Since French are barred there is no issue politically with loss of life in the units...

Not that I think anyone really cares all that much, but the above mentioned facts have actually drastically changed in recent years.
- The force is now comprised of both foreign and domestic (French) persons. The foreign now use their correct identity, in fact not allowing criminals of any type. It has been said that with the background check and lack of understanding of current policies that the joining of the French Foreign Legion (FFL) is the worlds largest sting operation.
- Ironically it is now domestic service members who use an alias (that is, French citizens who attempt to join must use an alias).
- Also where foreigners who completed their term of duty became French citizens in the past, now at completion they remain a citizen of their previous country.
- The term is five years. (As a side note for those who are interested: the prospective soldier must be, and remain, single for their entire term.
- Foreign recruits are also technically not allowed to step foot on French soil during their term.

Sorry if this is boring to anyone, I am just terribly interested in this historic force. Any other questions please just ask!
