Sure, it's good fun, but I've never seen a movie that wanted to be "Top Gun" more than this one did. Dark-haired 80s heart-throb plays a military guy who is good at what he does, but a bit reckless? Check. The best friend, who is in a serious relationship, dies? Check. Rick Rossovich is one of the sidekicks? Check. Kooky sports scene in which the guys all cut loose? Check. (Although volleyball is much hotter than golf, no matter how short Haysbert's shorts were.) Music for that scene: The Boys Are Back In Town, vs. Playing With The Boys. Earnest theme song with power ballad guitar chords? Check. You can sing the "Top Gun" theme over the top of the Navy Seals theme, and it matches in tempo, rhythm, and chord changes. And we had Joanne Whaley-Kilmer instead of Val Kilmer, but there is yet again a connection.
I agree the movie was cheesy fun, it was just a movie that had already been made once.
