It's funny how few people even knew what DEVGRU (the real name of the unit, SEAL Team Six hasn't existed since the 80's) was until a few weeks ago. Now there are so many experts.
It's not a super secret unit. The government doesn't deny it exists. This is a normal military unit whose budget is fully accounted for by the DoD. Much of what they do is classified, just like every other SEAL Team and other unit in the Special Operations community. Many aspects of this unit are public, and many other aspects are not public. What made the guys, who killed bin laden, unique and special is the same stuff that makes every other SEAL special. The only difference is what these guys are assigned to do and their mission. Are they tougher, more mentally strong, faster, stronger? Let me just say that you're not going to be able to distinguish a guy from DEVGRU from any other SEAL. What the Team did in Pakistan is something every SEAL, who has ever worn the Trident, is trained and capable of doing. If this was in a different area of the world is could have very well been an entirely different Team as SEAL Teams traditionally operate in geopgraphic areas.
It has been known for quite some time that DEVGRU selects individuals from the existing SEAL Teams who bring specific traits and skills that are needed for the team. It is an endless list of skills because SEALS possess an incredible variety of skills and traits.
The unit has been written about many times before. Richard Marcinko first wrote about them almost 20 years ago. Rob Gormley wrote his book over 10 years ago. Dennis Chalker wrote his 9 years ago. Wasdin has his book coming out soon.
