Does anyone else think that Annie purposefully either left the hair clip on the floor or intentionally dropped it, and was testing Paul to see if he would use it to get out of the room? If so, it makes that scene even more brilliant!

No. Annie even said that she couldn't figure out how Paul was able to leave the room after she found hair pin. Which in no way would have been able to pick that type of door lock. And why would she even risk the chance of him escaping the room by leaving the pin on the floor. Since she left the house often to go to the store.
