In the book, King reveals that to Annie there are 2 kinds of people in the world: "dirty birdies" and "poor dears" that need to be put out of their misery. By killing the babies she felt she was relieving their suffering.
Its hard to imagine the Annie of the film being that "benevolent" (her type of benevolent, not sane people's). I take it they could not prove she killed the babies then? I read the book over 20 years ago, and don't recall much of it as I hated it.
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus." "Didn't he discover America?" "Penfold, shush."
No, they never proved it. Everyone knew she'd done it, but she was careful and they never were able to really prove it. She still lost her job and everyone always reminded her of it (kids would drive past her house and yell "Dragon Lady" at her, among other things), but she never was charged with a crime.
In the book she was charged with the deaths of several of the children and taken to trial, but she was found not guilty. She was in prison during the trial, presumably because she was either not able to raise bail, or was being held without bail due to the nature of the crimes.
Given what we read & SEE of Annie Wilkes in the novel and film...I find it darn near impossible to believe that Annie's murders had anything at all to do with sympathy. She was an evil, narcissistic psychopath. It was ALL about her.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus. Didn't he discover America? Penfold, shush.
I don't think you know much about the things you are talking about here. People running their mouths constantly about mental illnesses they have no education about is a lot of the reason people with mental illnesses get such inadequate care.
And sadomasochism? Sadism, yeah, probably, but when did she enjoy receiving pain of any sort?
Watching the film again, I realized that Annie was a serial killer of not just babies: She kills a nursing student (no doubt because she outstripped Annie, who felt she 'deserved' to be Top Student, what a twisted witch) and even doctors who were in a coma. THEN moves on to babies!
Terrible.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus. Didn't he discover America? Penfold, shush.
I wouldn't say that as Rhoda did not have the emotions or motives that a person like Anne would have. Rhoda lacked compassion and had more.....cold emotionless mode. She was strictly killing people for gain or to protect herself. She was killed people for "practical" reasons not nessessarily out of hate or emotional reasons. I think Annie is driven by something more emotional.
On her own she knew she would have never been able to conceive because she knew that no man with a sound mind would do the deed to give her the pleasure of motherhood so what's better than robbing others of what she herself can't have.
