What I don't get about Megan

So she's this shy, sort of mousy girl who at some point in her teenage life decides to dress up all tough and goth-like only to.. continue acting all shy and mousy?

Maybe it's just my kitchen sink psychology showing through, but isn't the whole point of dressing as eccentric as Megan does throughout the movie (not to mention her bleached hair on the side) to get a sense of empowerment from it? It's obviously attention-grabbing in a "See if I care!"-kind of way, yet the first thing she does when people laugh about her is run to the bathroom and cry.

I guess you could argue that it was sort of like a school uniform in L.A. back then (I'm sure the folks in her new town think as much) and she just didn't know that regular teenagers have a much more boring fashion sense, but it's not like she tones it down after that first incident. Instead she literally tops it with this ridiculous hat that she wears on her second day to school.. http://i41.tinypic.com/2dkekjl.jpg

Like I said, I don't get it. I'm not saying that people who wear "loud" clothes can't be shy, nor am I saying that shy people can't be secret attention whores (something I myself have been guilty of in the past), but the juxtapositon of how she dresses tough and still acts all shy just strikes me as rather odd.

Any thoughts?

You're correct that it was a sort of uniform in LA back then. However, after her father died, she moved to a small town in Iowa where the "goth" style hadn't caught on yet. As the move was sudden and just before school year, Megan had no other clothes to wear.

See, I can absolutely accept that, no problem. But she still could've easily toned down the over-accessorizing and make-up after that first day, if she really didn't want to draw attention. Or, you know, at least not wear that hat. Just sayin'. ;-)

I was just thinking she looks like (but doesn't act like) Lydia Dietz from Beetlejuice turned it up a notch. It's a bit at odds with the character. But is it explicitly stated she was shy before? I don't remember. Maybe she was just your typical introspective gloomy goth but moving to a new place forced her into her shell a bit.

I didn't think she looked "tough" at all. Black clothes does not equal tough. She looked like a goth wallflower, and her shyness didn't seem the least bit in opposition to her dress.
