Question about Carl/James apartment and Susan's condo

Okay, I am on vacation right now and I am staying in Redondo/Hermosa beach where this movie was supposedly filmed back in 1990. This movie was part of the reason why I chose to vacation here.

In the movie, Carl mentions on the phone ordering the pizza that they are at 820 Esplanade. It is also mentioned that Susan's apartment is at 825 Esplanade. However, anyone who has been to Redondo/Hermosa knows that Esplanade is on the waterfront. In the movie, their residences don't look like they are anywhere near the water.

So does anyone know the actual locations of those buildings? It would be cool to see what the area looks like 22 years later.

Hi Jim, I would like to visit the place too and I would like to ask if you managed to find it? Thank you, Brano

Brano,

Never did manage to find it. There was one clue in the movie that I found though. In the scene where Susan and Carl take off in her corvette, you see James making a u-turn in the pickup truck. You can catch a glimpse of a bronze statue of a guy surfing a wave.

That statue is now located at Hermosa Beach pier which has a bunch of shops and restaurants now. However, back in the eighties, it was located near Redondo Beach. I tried looking around there, but had no luck. It looks like there has been a ton of new development there over the past two decades, so those buildings may be long gone.

There is an Esplande that runs down the beach front, Avenue H where Carl throws the bowling ball exists, and I am pretty sure the park where the cops are handcuffed to the wheel still exists too (Miramar Park at the end of Esplande heading south). Also, the restaurant where Carl and James discuss their surf shop plans over beer is called Good Stuff at Hermosa Beach Pier.

It is a great place to visit. Have fun!

Hello Jim,

Thank you very much for H avenue tip. With my friends we have located also some other streets like:

Trader Joe's which is opposite the Jack Berger's office: http://goo.gl/maps/jSb04 (Berger's office does not exist anymore)

or Sea Sprite Motel and Appartments http://goo.gl/maps/mzp2r where they picked up the bins with garbage,

or here http://goo.gl/maps/m5IDy where they picked up the dead body of Berger :-)

And this is where they crossed the yellow line and they drove wrong way while fighting with Louis during their first supervision :-) http://goo.gl/maps/xOL8S

I am planning to visit places as well, looking forward to see whole area.
You are right, it is very funny to go through the places how they look differently after decades.

lol Any time!

Good job finding those other locations. I realized later after driving down South Catalina that that was where Louis punched Carl in the truck lol

If you go down the Esplanade toward Redondo, there is a high rise condo on the left near the end of Esplanade that kind of looks like Susans place. However that wouldn't make any sense since Carl and James were directly across from her.

Hope you are enjoying your trip!

James

I'm glad people appreciate this movie. I thought I was the only one. It's still funny to this day. It's also the only movie in the history of my childhood watching premium cable to air concurrently (at the same time) on HBO and Showtime. It was summer. It was glorious.

This fog is getting thicker!
And Leon's getting laaaaarrrrrger!

There are 2 apartment complexes across the street from each other at 730 and 727 Esplanade that could have possibly been the inspiration for the movie.
