Subtitles on DVD don't work?

I just bought this super cheap at a used DVD store; I've got the one that has the dark red cover with "Marked for Death" in gray letters. There's a subtitle option, but selecting that option doesn't bring up any subtitles. I tried both the English and Spanish subtitles; nothing shows up. I've never had this problem with a DVD before; I'm not zoomed in on my TV or anything like that, subtitles should show up, but nothing happens. Some of the Jamaicans' accents, along with the reverberation of the locations they shot dialogue in, makes it near impossible to understand what they're saying, and I could've really used some.

Anyone else have this same problem with the DVD?
