Who is Bob Gray?

I noticed that a few times in book Pennywise is referred to as Robert or Bob Gray (Grey? sp?) and I wondered who that was or where did that name come from?
Thanks
Also did anyone else notice that all the 7 kids were not only childless but also only children? Bill of course was only an only child after his brother died but there is no mention of any siblings of any of the others. I don't believe specific mention is made of them being only children but there is no mention of anyone having a sibling. It does say that Richie has no sisters or brothers but no other mention is made of any in book or movie. Stan possibly could bc we don't hear much about his family but I'm pretty sure Bev, Ben, Eddie and Mike were sibling-less.

Bob Gray is another form that "IT" took, just as Pennywise was another ITs true form was the deadlights

Never thought about them being only children, good point, I guess that made them become more united.

reply

I think that Bob Grey and Pennywise were supposed to be the same form(Bob Grey was Pennwise, with pennywise being his stage name)

reply

oh that makes sense- a stage name... thanks! Thought I had missed it in the book somewhere bc Pennywise introduces himself as Bob Gray to Georgie when he is in Pennywise form.

reply

No problem, however, I always was curious to know if there was some significance or meaning of the name Pennywise in relation to the story.

reply

Pennywise sounds like a good name for a clown- a creepy evil clown.

reply

True!

That's how I took it as well.

I suspect this was something King planned to develop later on while writing the story, but never got around to it, or decided to drop it from the story. Kind of like the apparent incident involving a frightened Victor Criss approaching the Losers at some point. Or the fact Mike has a claw mark on his chest despite not having been cut by the werewolf when they first confront IT.

As for the others not having siblings, it's not something to notice, Bill is the only one who had a sibling.

You don't find it a bit ironic that none of them had children or siblings? Bill became an only child after his brother died. I thought it was interesting that they were all only children. Many times kids who are only children have very active imaginations- NOT saying kids with siblings DON'T but I am just saying that only children many times have only themselves to play with- no siblings so sometimes have to be more creative or imaginative bc they get very lonely. NOT all but some...just sayin...

reply

Not really. I mean, I think it just works better from a storytelling standpoint. If any of them had siblings, they likely would have to be written into the story, which would have made an impact to the characters. They're all each other has, in a way. And since Bill was the only one to have a sibling, they can't really know what he's going through.

do you guys think that Bob/Pennywise was an actual person killed by IT or just a disguise IT caame up with?

reply

That is a good question, it was never talked about in the novel. The only tiime the name it ever talked about, besides when Pennywise met Georgie, is when Beverly was visiting her old home were the old lady/Pennywise was. Inside the apartment there was an armoire that ha BG on it and the old lady/pennywise says that her father gave it to her. But other than that in dream catcher there is a character called Robert Grey, but it is not known if there was a connection.

I've always thought of IT as kinda like Freddy from Nightmare on Elm Street. I thought Bob Gray was a man who was a clown with the stage name Pennywise. He died and IT took on form of Pennywise.

I'm half way through the book now and one thing I've wondered is maybe Bod Gray killed kids when he was a live and continued as IT after death. I don't know just a guess.

Mike was cut by the bird in the stack, not by the werewolf.

Isn't it interesting that in Dreamcatcher, in which Derry is a main location in the plot, has a villain named Mr. Gray?

I already said that.

reply

Maybe he's a version of Flagg. I haven't read the Dark Tower series yet.

reply

Robert/Bob Gray is just a false name used by It as the so-called "real" name of Its favorite form of the clown to make It seem human.

reply

Looking for meaning in the name, Bob can mean a short jerky motion, kind of like a floating balloon on a string.
