They don't make movies like this anymore do they?

IA has long been a favorite of mine! Just saw this again on cable. Superb performances from everyone, including all the supporting cast members - the acting throughout was so subtle and nuanced, especially from Faye Grant, Anabella Sciorra and Nancy Travis.

Curious though...seems all the posts here [at least what's archived and available] seem to focus on Gere's performance. While absolutely excellent, I think Andy Garcia's portrayal of the obsessed, machismo anti-hero IAD cop deserves serious kudos as well. I think this was the first film which brought Garcia to my attention as a terrific actor.

I think what I am trying to say is that, these days, most films are missing the mature, sincere gravitas in the performances that we have here.

Any thoughts?

u make a fair point but ultimately geres performance is a relevation while garcia is well...ok

feargal72: Agreed, Gere was awesome. But we can agree to disagree re: Garcia ;-)...I really liked him in this, especially as he mentally cuckolds himself due to Gere's machinations.

I thought Garcia was great in this movie. I don't necessarily know why, but I think his best scene was the one with Gere's wife in the parking garage where he just slams her door shut and starts giving her the business. It felt real.

dkgambler: Yes, that was a terrific scene...Of course, I love Annabella Sciorra anyway, but they both did a great job.

I agree with your message title: They don't make movies like this anymore do they?

One of my most favorite films, simply because of how everything comes together to make a great experience.

Thanks mike_cable. I miss real quality stuff like IA. Nothing seemed too over the top and for the most part, everything that happens is fairly plausible. No CGI trickery, overwhelming and spolier-like score, just top notch acting from everyone involved.

Is it a brilliant film? No. But is it an example of an extremely well-produced and acted movie? IMO, definitely yes!

Guess we can always watch stuff like this on DVD right?
