Why did I get the sneaking suspicion Messieurs Gere and Baldwin were having a 'thing' while they were filming this?

That early scene where Gere keeps smacking Baldwin then lets him cry into his chest was pretty epic. Not many actors go there. Not many movies for that matter. It's what sets the tone that this is more than a cop-thriller and, really, a journey into the darkness.
shareAgree that scene was indeed pivotal, revealing just how deep and effective Peck was at manipulation. Alpha dog, without doubt. So many subtle things I love about this film - 20 years later and it still runs rings around so many of today's poor excuses for "thrillers".
