Amy Wallace...

I'd say Amy was the real hero of the film; I loved how she kept her integrity intact despite Raymond's tantrums over Peck sleeping with Kathleen. Ray was all right, but he got a bit cocky and was more of an anti-hero toward the end. It was so stupid of him to kill Peck; I suspect he got busted for it. He really stooped to Peck's level there. Granted, he had a right to be mad over Peck sleeping with his wife, but come on, Ray got carried away, esp. making that scene in the restaurant and smacking his wife, then hurling the chair and breaking it right in the office in front of everyone, then going and killing Peck. I thought, What an idiot at the end. Poor Amy, I know she'd be shocked to find out what Ray did once she woke up...and that's on top of being partially paralyzed after being shot.

I wonder where Amy grew up and all? The film doesn't say too much about her background other than that she's gay and probably Jewish. Anyone have any speculations?

True. I'm glad they didn't have Amy die; that would have been the pits.

reply

Where in the movie did it say Amy was Jewish?? Just curious.

It's all about the corned beef sandwiches and pineapple juice

reply

I think it's a small hint, although it doesn't really say. Maybe because Laurie is Jewish in real life, I kind of assumed Amy was also.

I suspect Amy's living in San Franciso now doing a desk job for the SFPD...maybe even a chief there.

I like Raymond..he has flaws, but that's what i like about him. Your love for Amy makes you blind to that fact...lol..no, but seriously, I understand your points, but I still consider Raymond the hero. Why was it "stupid" for him to kill Peck in the end? he broke into Ray's home, threatened his wife's well-being, then attempted to kill him...what the hell was he supposed to do? stand there and watch and die? elaborate on what u meant please...

No, Raymond could have just shot Peck enough to disable him, then called for backup. That's what most dignified cops do. Neither Raymond's or Kathleen's lives were in danger at that point since Raymond had Peck's gun while Kathleen had the other gun. Peck did not have the gun at that point.

And Ray's hitting Kathleen no matter how upset he was right there in the restaurant was inexcusable under any circumstances. I can see him being upset, but he still had no right to hit her, then create a huge disturbance right there in a classy restaurant. In real life, Ray would have been arrested right there.

oh, i forgot that Peck only had a knife why Ray and Kathleen had guns...oops, my fault...well, in that case ur right, he could've shot Peck to injure him and save his sorry ass for jail time...

and the scene in the restaurant with Raymond and Kathleen was surprising, a little amusing (sorry but i can't help to think that), but overall, dead wrong of him without any proof but the panties that Peck gave him, which Raymond should've known wasn't his...

ur right...he's the anti-hero, but I still like his character more than goody-goody Amy Wallace : )

Yeah, actually, the restaurant tantrum Ray threw was a tad amusing because it revealed Raymond's immaturity there.

I still like Amy, goody or so. She's sweet.

the only problem there Coryaisa is that Raymond killing Peck was dignified. Peck was a heartless brute and scumbag, he manipulated his friend Van Stretch into committing illegal acts, seduced his wife and later murdered him. He later organized the murder of Dorian Fletcher, an amiable man innocent of any wrongdoing. He agreed to murder the parents of Steven Arrocas, and then entered the Arrocas home, had sex with Tova and then murdered both Tova and Steven. He was obsessed with fatherhood but at the end of the day he just looked on his kids as trophies, he wanted to appear a competent man by being a father, he never gave a damn about his family or really anyone, as he just went around murdering people and screwing lots of women. No redeeming features whatsoever, and deserving of death. And he even tried to kill Amy, and she's your favourite person from the whole movie.

On another note, Peck did keep trying to come at Raymond with that knife. So theres even more reason.

It wasn't as if Raymond wantonly killed Peck. he gave him a chance, shooting him once in the leg but still Peck kept coming. I doubt many American cops would have even given him that chance. Peck wanted to die. He did'nt want to go to prison..for obvious reasons.

Ray should have called 911, then shot both of Peck's legs and maybe his hand, then. Yeah, Peck was a horrid a$$ and death was way too easy for him. Dennis should have spent a lifetime behind bars in a cold, dingy cell for life.

reply

wow. How many Laurie Metcalf posters do you have in your room?

For clarification: Peck never slept with Kathleen. He only made Raymond think he did.

Ray's assault of Kathleen in the restaraunt may have been a stretch, however it was intended to show his "macho" latino pride and reenforce with the audience that Peck could get to him through his wife.

"shoot him in both legs and the hand and call 911"??? I can only shake my head.

reply

How true...Dennis knew how twisted Ray was getting and how jealous he is. And Ray's attitude was not some "latino macho" pride; many latino men do not have that attitude. Ray showed "macho" stupidity and immaturity there, which is irrelevent to his ethnic background, so it's stereotypical to tie is actions with being Hispanic.

If Ray had been Anglo, black, or Asian, he still would have acted the same way...stupid, jealous, "macho," and immature. That was Ray for you; it revealed that he was fast sinking to Dennis' level.

Face reality, Ray didn't kill Dennis out of self-defense or for some noble reason; he killed for revenge, which some fans don't want to see.

Yes, that's the sensible thing many police officers do first to disable an assailant.

I still think death was far too easy for Dennis; I think it would have been better for somebody like Dennis to endure life in a cold, dark, slimy, dingy jail cell for life.

Last count I have 10,010,7 Laurie Metcalf posters and 12,987,598 Amy Wallace posters, 333,987,28 Roseanne posters, 178,983,33 Harry Potter posters, 122,777 Annie Maclean posters, and 764,339,12 Beverly Crusher posters. How many do you have?

reply

From the point of view of the audience, it may seem that Raymond could have avoided killing Peck.

But him and his wife are the only witnesses. Unless she rats him out, he'll be fine.

Do you have a huge lesbian crush on Amy or something? You keep putting her up on a pedestal and making her out to be something that she wasn't. She wasn't really an interesting character at all and didn't really have a lot of screen time. If I had to pick a real hero, it would be Kathleen or Ray.

reply

* Wallace is one of those adopted "Jewish" names like Leonard, Barker et al.

* While Ray prob did the dept. a service in killing Peck (no trial showing corruption) he should have the discipline to arrest, not shoot him. Peck wins.

* Ray was annoying in a lot of ways. Talented but can be easily distracted.
