Post-Internal Affairs fate of characters...anyone wonder what happened?
Amy's slow painful, but courageous long road back...
I think after Amy was partially paralyzed by Dennis' bullet, she woke up a few days later, but had only bits and pieces of a memory from the shot and the rush to the hospital. She cannot remember actually falling or Raymond holding her hand. Kind of some fanfiction I'm working on as to what happens to the characters, which I love doing; another one I'm thinking of is Working Girl. She was amazed that she survived.
Her mom and three sisters arrived and were there when she awoke three days later. In my imagination, Amy has two older sisters and one younger one. Her dad died when she was 15, so it's just her mom and sisters. They're so glad to see her survive. Ray edges in, watching them, then waves. Amy slurrily introduces them, although her mind is still foggy and unclear.
Amy realizes that she can't feel her legs or her waist. Her younger sister Marcy stays by her bedside the most; Marcy is an interior designer and really looks up to Amy. Marcy is there when the doctor tells Amy that she might not walk again. Amy is rather numb at first and quietly accepts the news. Amy's own doctor comes and says how sorry she is about Amy's condition.
Amy is horrified to realize that she really is crippled and has great difficulty rolling over, can't get out of bed without help and can't even bathe without help. She breaks down and really, really cries a day later and her mom holds her. Marcy is also there and hands her tissues.
Amy meanwhile also worries about what's happening at the IAD; she's worried about Ray and the others and what Dennis may be doing now. A call comes telling her that Dennis is dead and that Ray has been arrested. Amy, who was just crying over the news of her paralysis, hangs up and keens, Oh, Mom, it's gotten worse... before breaking down again. She's so upset that she can't talk for a long time, so her mom and Marcy just hold her and take turns stroking her hair and wiping her tears.
Raymond's brush with crime and punishment
As for Raymond Avila...sorry, but for killing Peck, he's busted and jailed for a night. His dad, Juan, comes and bails him out and asked him why he did such an idiotic thing and tells him his career could be ruined. Ray is silent, then complains to his parents about Dennis and the affairs and about Kathleen cheating on him. Ray has to go to trial.
Ray's also suspended from his job. His boss is semi-sympathetic, but still thinks Ryamond was wrong to kill Peck. Kathleen supports Raymond some, but is really thinking of divorcing him. They fight and scream more over the phone, then bang them down.
Ray gets back to his home to discover that Kathleen has indeed left and he throws a few things around. He calls the hospital and talks a little to Amy's mom.
Amy is still too upset to talk at first, but later when she does, she asks him shakily Oh, Raymond, why? Ray says he can't believe Amy's crying over this and Amy snaps back a little stronger Of course I'm crying...I thought you'd be...above Peck's mentality. Jesus fckng Christ...
Ray is silent a minute, digesting Amy's words, but can't quite grasp what she means. They make small talk a while, both clearly uncomfortable. Then Amy says she'll try to see what she can do for Ray's trial. B-but, Ray...I can't condone... Amy's voice fills with tears again and nearly breaks. I can't cover for you again...I'm so sorry it's come to this...Amy's voice breaks then. Sure...bye, Ray says with a bit of bitterness and they hang up.
Ray goes to trial two months later and gets off on probation and is able to work again, but is relegated to a desk job and demoted. Some of his co-workers like his killing Peck, but some don't.
Back to Amy's ordeal
Amy goes thru several months of intense therapy and slowly begins to walk again, but it is a very slow, painful process and often leaves her exhausted, discouraged and in tears. She comes back to the IAD, but also has a desk job and needs a cane and leg braces. Her walk is slow and her legs are weak and often spastic.
Amy's problems are far from over...some of the guys give poor Amy a hard time. They basically reduce her to secretarial work and give her their reports to type.
At an office gathering, some of the guys make fun of Amy and tape a picture of a dog with her face on the back of her blouse. She sees it and tries to hide her hurt over it, but it leaks out in her face. Ray doesn't want to get on the guys' bad side, but at the same time sees the pain in Amy's face and is uncomfortable, but doesn't come to her aid.
This is part of the backlash against feminism in the late 1980's and early 1990's. The teasing gets worse and poor Amy finds herself demoted. She crushed and discouraged.
Marcy and Kathleen encourage her to apply to a higher position maybe in San Francisco and she does. She gets the job and once there, she moves back up to sergeant. This position is more female-friendly and her new partner is a woman, so she doesn't feel so uncomfortable. Her hard work finally pays off years later when she's promoted several more times.
She acquires a lover who has a five-year-old daughter and later the two of them marry in SF once gay marriage is legalized.
Meanwhile, she and Ray lose touch and haven't seen each other since. Ray divorced, then remarried a few years later. He stayed in the LAPD, but realized too late that he compromised his integrity for a fast catch and it wasn't worth it.
Meanwhile Kathleen remarried someone with two kids and they later had a son of their own. She's still in her art gallery career and likes it. She often wonders how Amy is and will never forget her, esp. the dignified way Amy carried herself despite Kathleen's outburst and the immature stupidity that went on in the LA IAD.
Penny got post-traumatic stress counseling and started work as a paralegal. She also had trouble with alcohol, but got treatment for it.
So, that's what I think happened to the characters.
