This is so underrated!
How is this movie not more popular?
shareIt's 22 years old. When I saw this in the early 90s, it also impressed me and the scene where Peck suffocates his partner particularly stuck in my mind. But having just watched it again, I don't think it's a really good film. Maybe they should've called it External Affairs because it's all surfaces and moody music.
shareWhat do you mean by "all surfaces"?
shareJust that it's more concerned with style than substance. It has pretensions to be a psychological duel between Garcia and Gere, but that would require a subtlety and imagination in the writing that's sadly lacking.
shareI thought it was an enjoyable film.. I enjoyed the battle between Andy Garcia and Richard Geres characters (in the trivia section it says they really didn't get along but I do wonder whether that may have been part of the publicity) and they both did a great job of playing their parts - Andy Garcia as the honourable husband and Richard Gere as the seducer... Working his way into people's lives so that he can get what he wants from them without most of them even realising. However, I don't think it was really anything new.. None of it surprised me and it was pretty obvious how it was going to end.. It was enjoyable but there was nothing to set it apart from other films.
