Andy Garcia and Richard Gere fought???

According to the trivia of this movie, Andy Garcia and Richard Gere did not get along at all during the making of this movie. The scenes in which their characters had altercations were reportedly real. Andy Garcia apparently did not attend the wrap party.

My question is why??? Those two guys aren't prima donna's, right? They're not craving to be in the Hollywood limelight, like so many other people. They would appear to be two people who could get along just fine. Was there a specific reason why they didn't?

Two different acting styles that didn't mesh was what Figgis said on twitter.

Richard Gere is by far the superior actor. I found Garcia's hothead rants pretty annoying. Fiery Latin, was that the idea? Way over the top, for me. And he slaps his wife in the face in a restaurant. Ugh.

Great performance by Gere.

Fiery Latin orfiery Italians or fiery French? Lol, he's a hothead here, not in all films. Why do you have to bring his ethnicity into this?
