Just one example: the scene where he first meets Raymond, and Raymond compliments him over a past case. Gere first gives a friendly, beaming smile, and within a split second, it is transformed into a dead look of malevolence. But it's done so smoothly. That split second there ranks among the best facial acting I've ever seen.
And I could give one example after another from this film, from both Gere and the other actors.
In fact, I'll give one more example, from Garcia: when Penny tells him "Think I don't know what you're about?" Garcia then gives her a stone-cold look, which successfully communicates about half a dozen different emotions. And when he keeps that frozen look on his face as he says "Not from me" [=no more questions from me], that is just another moment of acting perfection.
Just thinking about this movie gets me so enthusiastic, so another example: just minutes later, when the young woman walks by, and Raymond catches his partner checking her out, the exchange of looks between Raymond and his partner, as he has discovered her sexual orientation, is another total marvel of acting.
Just an unbelievable movie. Virtually every scene is an acting tour de force.
Agreed -- whenever someone asks me 'What's a good cop movie?' I answer 'How about a great one?'
This has been one of my favorites since seeing it at a theater in 1990. I just got the blu-ray today, so I'm watching it tonight for the first time in a while.
So many good moments and scenes; one that stands out for me is Peck meeting Avila at the coffee stand, outside and at night -- incredible tension, and Gere's body language in front of the hooker is perfect.
So, just finished watching it -- somehow doesn't seem like a pic from 1990; it has a freshness about it that holds up really well.
Another terrific scene is Raymond confronting Kathleen at the restaurant. His quiet intensity before finally exploding is really something to see. The elevator scene with Gere and Garcia is also great, so raw and realistic.
And I too think this is one of Gere's best roles. He could have easily gone over the top, but he did a lot of subtle things with his eyes and expressions that really made the character believable.
The only disappointing thing: not a single extra on the disc.
One of the best police/crime movies. Great cast, Andy Garcia so handsome! I'll have to see the youtube trailer, I practically know the movie scene for scene.
I clearly recall he was taking her in the rear. Either doggie style or anal. More was not shown. But Richard Gere tells the husband immediately afterwards "She's a tramp. She wanted it in the ass, kill her..."
I remember when this came out, I was 17 and really liked it. Watched it quite a few times in the 90's then kind of stopped as time went on. Just watched it again recently and forgot how much I liked it and do love all the acting in it. I think it's a totally underrated movie. I feel that same way about Black Rain that came out the year before this one.
One of the best scenes IMO is where Garcia and Metcalf's characters confront the wife in the parking garage. The wife tries to play it off like she doesn't know anything, wants to feed him a few things he already knows and he methodically blows it all up and slams the door on her, cutting the BS. I remember the look on Metcalf's face, either really good acting or just the natural reaction of someone thinking "WTF"?
Anyway, I agree. Great movie. Oh and Nancy Travis was beautiful. I've always thought she was an underrated beauty and she really does it for me here.
SnoozeAlarm, totally agree with you, great acting by all the cast, the stand up has got to be Andy Garcia when he suspected that his wife had sex with Peck, raw emotion, Great film.
