The American sub had the best sonar operator in the fleet onboard. It wasn't that it was entirely silent. It was quieter than the propellers but it also produced a different type of sound that sonar was not used to hearing.

The SOSUS sonar nets in the ocean wouldn't pick it up with all the back ground noise. If you know where the sub is, it might be trackable if you're close enough, but it's far quieter than any screw driven sub.

In the case of this fictional sub, the Dallas was *very* close to the October and the sonar operator probably only picked it up because he heard the October's crew singing.

Remember that they had to get close enough to track it, the sonar nets alone couldn't place it.

I kind of look at it like the (also fictional) "cloaking device" that appears in the Star Trek franchise by the Federation's enemies like the Romulans and Klingons. The cloaking devices in those episodes were certainly far better than not having them but in several episodes and movies, they were able to track them *a bit* anyway..
