So why should we root for a soviet submarine?

we don't exactly know captain ramius' motives and what's at stake, so why should we care if he puts his own submarine in danger?

reply

It's revealed at the end that he planned to immigrate to America with his men and did not wish harm on any Americans.

reply

yes, that's the point - it's revealed AT THE END. information like this should be given in the exposition of the movie and not at the end when the whole thing is already over.

If you would have paid attention you would have had your answer 48 minutes into the movie... but go on, blame the movie for your lack of attention.

reply

are you gonna share with us what that answer at 48 minutes was? you're right, the movie got boring so my attention started to dwindle, but even after reading up the plot on wikipedia i didn't find something i missed.

reply

The movie got boring?
Fuck you man, go watch transformers you useless piece of shit.
The Hunt for Red October is an awesome film and never gets boring, let alone in the first half.

You're not worthy of it, let's call a spade a spade.
The problem is not the movie, it's YOU.

reply

i just want to find out what i missed, what's so exciting about it. are you gonna enlighten me?

and for the record: i found transformers even more boring.

Ramius deduced that the new sub design would be used as a "offensive weapon" able to launch multiple nuclear missiles with very little warning. This ability could make a first strike 'win' in a nuclear war more feasible. By defecting, the Americans would then know how the sub works and how to detect it. (Which they already figured out before the end)

There was a scene where he explained this to his trusted officers while eating (the cook was on to him though)

To this day sub tracking is a very big thing for military intelligence agencies worldwide.

reply

thanks. so we should care about the soviet submarine soley because the usa would have missed a chance to get their hands on the superior russian technology if the submarine had been destroyed? ok, that's an explanation, even though it doesn't sound very thrilling to me.

reply

There are some mad generals out there that think a nuclear war is winnable, a quick massive strike could prove them right. Imagine 20 of these subs sitting off the coast of the USA.
